Synopsis
The purpose of this study was to examine the types of questions North Carolina adolescents ask BrdsNBz, a text message warm-line operated by the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina. Adolescent sexual behavior has an increased risk of negative health outcomes and research has established that adolescents have improved health outcomes when provided with medically accurate information, such as in comprehensive sexual health education. The study examines the topics of sexual health questions adolescents from North Carolina asked BrdsNBz between February 1, 2009 and March 13, 2011 and the frequency of those topics before and after passage and implementation of the Healthy Youth Act in North Carolina in the 2010-2011 school year. Data analysis concluded that North Carolina adolescents ask a wide range of questions about sexual health regardless of the sexual health education curriculum, with many of the questions focused on general sexual health information and behaviors. The two most commonly addressed topics were general sexual health information and sexual behaviors. This suggests that sexual health education should emphasize general subject matter.
